Kavli Prize Week 2022
Kavli Prize Week 2022

My father won the 2022 Kavli Prize for foundational research on helioseismology, something that's helpful if you've ever wondered what's inside the sun, or really any star. While my contributions to helioseismology are significantly less, I did get to travel with him to Norway for the award ceremony, so that was pretty cool.
Last time I was in Norway I was just transiting the airport after spending a year in Spain. The customs agent claimed I'd overstayed my visa and threatened that I might be banned from the Schengen Zone for 5 years. Fortunately, a year later when I'd completely forgotten about it I received a letter from the Norwegian Embassy saying I hadn't overstayed I was free to return. This time, instead of an angry customs agent, there was a literal welcome party.

This is in the modern art section of the National Museum. I've visited Paris and Barcelona and lived in Madrid but Oslo is now my favorite when it comes to art.

The National Museum: Escalade Beyond Chromatic Lands, Sheila Hicks. These were actually really big. Like maybe 20 feet tall. I like that you can't easily tell in the photo though.

The National Museum: Ilya Kabakov, The Garbage Man. Basically, a re-creation of some dude's apartment with all sorts of random stuff catalogued. It's behind a normal looking door and I didn't realize you could go in at first. In some other sections of the museum, this idea seemed to be continued by other artists and there were more random apartment recreations. At least I think that's what they were. These were less cool but still kinda fun.

Chris, Nate, Ben and I went on a Oslo fjord cruise. This probably sounds like a super-touristy thing to do, and it was. Sometimes super-touristy things are super-fun. A lot of Oslo's suburbs seem to be built around craggy fjords and the cruise was a great way to see them.
The cruise also included a dinner of all-you-can-eat shrimp which I assumed was a joke when I heard it. It was actually somewhat of a challenge though: how many shrimp are you willing to peel?
Mayo, butter, lemons, white bread, lettuce, and endless shrimp. Also wet wipes. Lots of wet wipes.
Yea, I could live there.
There were these tiny homes all around the shoreline.

Oh look, a full moon. Nice.

The big day: Award ceremony followed by the government banquet.
Dad and his fancy new Kavli Prize!
Sidney, Scott, and the king of Norway.
No king in this photo but at least one Kavli laureate.

The Oslo Observatory.
We got to go on a tour of the observatory.
After the observatory tour I decided to walk around Oslo a bit and I ended up at Vigeland Park.

Andrew Fabian's lecture. I think this means if we transition from petrol to black holes we can solve global warming.

Flying over the Greenland fjords is one my favorite things ... like, ever.
Icebergs, fjords, glaciers
...and then nothing but endless white.
Lunch on the flight out. Salmon. I would be eating a lot of salmon on this trip. Quite good.
Bladder wrack? Apparently not what it sounds like, although still kinda weird. I swear I never drink this much, but of course I had to try all of these. I, umm, don't remember which I liked the most, but they were all quite good.
Duck. Of course I ordered the duck. Pretty good.
Dinner at Festningen. I think this was cod. On the terrace where we ate the options were this or a hamburger. The online menu looks a lot more diverse ... and expensive.
Peruvian poké at Pink Fish. Peruvian, Hawaiian, Norwegian food is not as good as it sounds; at least in this case. It wasn't bad for the price though.
More fish! The best food I've ever had at a royal banquet.
Salmon at the Palmen Restaurant inside the Grand Hotel. The best salmon I had on the trip.
The flight back. More salmon.
Even more salmon. I'm not complaining though. It was delicious.
